Thank you to the Saluki Club of Greater San Francisco for nominating me for either your sweepstakes, or match events. I cherish that you have put your trust in me to evaluate the young and upcoming stars of the breed.

I come to the Saluki breed in a rather unconventional way. My first “dogs” as an adult were an Old English Sheepdog and a Doberman Pinscher. It was only with my very dear friend, Ray Strucker, who had seen Saluki’s in encyclopedias as we were growing up as neighbors, that we looked in the back of DOG WORLD MAGAZINE and saw an ad from Ken and Mary Ellen Gorske. He called and said that he was interested in a “Feather-Head.” I could hear Mary Ellen stifle a laugh at that. They had no puppies at that time and referred us to Ron and Jackie Wassenaar.

Since 1983, I have owned three Salukis. My first Saluki, Mex Ch Ranesaw Ajnuh Baashiq, was my introduction to Sighthounds. I co-owned him with Ray. It is correct to say that I “cut my teeth” with Baashiq. I showed him to his Mexican champion title, put some points on him in the USA, trained him in obedience, and learned about lure coursing. He was a true conundrum in his demeanor and carriage – he was silly and outgoing with me, and stoic and aloof with Ray. It was many years later that DC CA Ch Carma’s Lethal Weapon, FCh, SC, CGC, JOR came into my life. Mel was campaigned successfully in the USA and Canadian show rings, as well as the USA and Canadian lure coursing fields. He was the consummate show dog, loving every bit of the attention, and fanfare. Mel built up quite the fan club, from the Saint Bernard folks of the Pacific Northwest (I was working for a handler who specialized in the breed), who cheered him on to his many group placements, and even gave him his own “spit rag” for the ring – and the Whippet people in both Canada and the USA. His true love, as is mine, is lure coursing, and I happily chauffeured him around the Pacific Northwest as well as California. A group winner in both the US and Canada, he had 13 career BIF awards. He won the coveted “Turkey Run Continuum” in 1999 and went on to win “Best of the Best.” The Turkey Run is the highlight of the coursing season in Southern California. Mel had the reputation of being “A Golden Retriever in a Saluki Suit” and raised several generations of Whippet puppies as his own. My next Saluki was Ranesaw JD Calypso, SC. My first smooth, he was the embodiment of a “Larger Whippet” – who loved lure coursing, tolerated showing (it wasn’t exciting), and thought that sleeping under the covers with his Whippet buddies was the best thing. He was major pointed in the show ring as well.

While Whippets are my true love, the Saluki will always have a special place in my heart.

I have been licensed to judge lure coursing since the mid-1990’s and was grandfathered in from ASFA to AKC when the program started. I have worked virtually every position at a trial; however, besides judging, many know that I really enjoy being the “Paddock Mistress” – where I earned the highly esteemed important title – “The Bellowing Bitch.”

I believe that the key to understanding the breed is to have a breadth of exposure and experience in all aspects of what a Saluki can do – not only excel in the show ring, as a hunter, and as a companion. It is incumbent of the keepers of the Saluki standard, the fanciers here who are my friends and mentors, bring this to the forefront, and educate not only those who we charge to evaluate the dogs for adherence to the standard, the fanciers, and the public as well.
